Student Success Stories

Chris Pajek

I graduated from the Massage Therapy program at OCHT in 2009 and since then have practiced in both a spa and clinical setting. Massage Therapy is a fantastic career choice for me because I truly love helping people and being part of an in demand medical health profession. To date I have taken continuing education courses in muscle energy and myofascial release to add to my massage repertoire and I look forward to taking an acupuncture course soon. I am currently working at Performance Physio Stoney Creek and loving every day of it. Christine Pajek

I have two passions, massaging and teaching.  After completing the Aestheticians program at Mohawk college, I realized how much I loved massage.  I decided to attend OCHT for training to be a Massage Therapist.  It was a brand new school so I was a little concerned.  I wasn't long into the program that I realized all my fears were unfounded.  There were amazing experienced instructors and everyone was there to make sure that all the students succeeded in their chosen programs.  So I am thankful I chose the right school.  While in school, I started teaching for Mohawk and Niagara college.  This helped me greatly while preparing for board exams.  At the same time, I also studied Acupuncture and finished my Bachelor of Arts at Brock University.  My husband and  two children, now 19 and deaf, and 14 and hearing; have helped to support my career choices.  Since I graduated I have been working in Beamsville for two chiropractors practicing massage and acupuncture and teaching still for both colleges.  Thanks to OCHT I have been able to fulfill both my passions and balance them well.  For the future, I am hoping to start on my masters degree and continue massaging and teaching.

I'm really pleased with the outcome of my career choice so I am happy to share! I had some great experience with the Colorado opportunity, just being given the chance to experience spa work was great. Working at Lincoln in Touch with Chris and Colleen was also a great experience, it gave me the knowledge and experience necessary to set up my own practice. Which is where I am today, for offically 1 year and 3 months! I could not be happier now, things have been going so well, I've had to hire another therapist to help me out! Future goals are to expand the business, and hopefully have a need for more therapists! Either way, I owe it all to OCHT, my best decision. Having the opportunity to talk to many collegues who have gone to other schools, I must say I truly feel fortunate to have had such an amazingly positive experience. You guys have given me the confidence, and more importantly the knowledge to do what I am doing today. I thought you both should know that you are really appreciated for all of your hard work. My journey has come full circle. Being a senior student at OCHT, I’m sure older than my instructors, I had people tell me prior to my enrolment, that it would be too hard for me at “my age” to accomplish. I didn’t listen, thank-fully! I forged ahead, determined to meet my goals, which was to be able to help people in a greater capacity as Massage Therapist. Physiotherapy was my first love, but it didn’t pan out due to circumstances. A desk job followed that spanned 28 years, but I consistently took holistic courses whenever I could. I was being propelled in a specific direction that was for certain! A birth of a daughter at 39 was a blessing. I was previously told that was impossible too. At the age of 45 I started my home based business, Archway to Renewal, in the town of Binbrook, providing holistic and esthetic services. I knew there was more. My attention was drawn to the new Massage Therapy College, not too far from home, at OCHT. I contacted Mel, met with Nick and the rest is history. I loved it! Hard work and I never thought I would get through those dreaded OSCEs, but I did it! While at OCHT their outreach program introduced me to the DR. Bob Kemp Hospice. I was very impressed with the facility, yet somewhat overwhelmed at times. I vowed upon graduation that I would volunteer which I did with their Day Program. It is truly rewarding and gratifying time that I spend there. Tears sometimes flow, but they are tears of gratitude that I could offer some comfort and compassion to those in need. My clinic has recently been renamed Archway to Renewal Natural Therapies, in order to encompass all of the modalities that I offer. I am currently enrolled in an Osteopathic program. My first year has just been completed. This program is building upon the strong foundation I received at OCHT. I am very grateful to the College for my training so I have the tools to help those on my life long journey. Thank-you Mel, Nick & faculty.

I graduated from the Ontario College of Health & Technology (OCHT) in June 2009.  Shortly after graduation, I started my career by practicing in an established Physiotherapist and Sports Injury Clinic as well as a Massage Therapy Clinic in the Niagara region.

Within only one year of beginning my career, I was able to establish a full time clientele and start my own thriving practice at Valley Way Spa & Massage Therapy Clinic. (www.valleywayspa.com)

I would attribute my success thus far to a solid, quality massage therapy education at OCHT, innate skills, and a vision to maintain a reputation of excellence within the field of Massage Therapy.

“If you take your studies seriously, do the best you can, set your goals and have faith to reach for a realistic dream, then doors will open for you and you will achieve your success.”   Grace Andrews, RMT

My name is Chris, I attended the Primary Care Paramedic program at Ontario College of Health and Technology in 2009 to 2010. In my pursuit of employment since my graduation I have found that the knowledge and practical skills that I aquired at OCHT have really helped put me in position to achieve my goal. I am happy to say, I have obtained employment as a Paramedic for Toronto Emergency Medical Services! The faculty in the paramedic program have much in the way of real on the job experience and their instruction is really geared to preparing the student for the challenges the career will bring. I found this extremely benefical. I also appreciated the personal attention they gave, always approachable, willing to answer questions, endevouring to help us understand difficult concepts. I would highly recommend OCHT to anyone, it was a great experience!

It seems like a long time has passed since the graduation, but actually it is not, just a bit over a year, but so many changes occurred in my life. New job, new car, new house and new life. I am very excited,it is a definitely good start for a new comer, was not easy at all , but it was worth to work hard for it. " As a new comer to Canada I was looking for a right path to start a new career in new place. In my case I did not need to do full 360 degree turn, but little adjustment to what I knew and what I used to do : from sport therapist I switched to be a paramedic, which allowed me to stay within the health care field. I just needed to switch my rehabilitation skills to emergency mode, but to do that I needed to go to college. Luckily, after long web searching I discovered OCHT website, and realized that the application due date is in a few days, I applied and received prompt call inviting me for an assessment, now I realize that it was a cornerstone in my life. I also applied to community college for the same program, but was denied admission, due to high school credits from overseas (even despite my college diploma). Regardless a notion that private schools cost more money, I knew there is no reason to go back to high school to learn biology, chemistry and math one more time, community college will cost me something even more precious - TIME. I decided to go to OCHT, I graduated earlier than I would in community college, and the most important I got a real job right away, which paid me $80 000 in a first year. Instead I could be learning math and biology for free a year long. Now I have a job that I really love and it pays very well, thanks OCHT."

Growing up, I had always struggled in school, this definitely contribute to a low self esteem, and gave me doubts about doing well in the future my secondary school years were more successful.  I then started college; I quickly became overwhelmed and changed my plan.  Thinking that I just needed some time to work and then go back to school, well I never did go back. Working at different jobs and enjoying each of them, I would always succeed and wonder what else was out there. And so life moved on, marriage and a wonderful son.  Then another setback, my marriage did not work out, leaving me raising my son on my own. I kept working to provide for him.

Working in the Emergency Department for a Natural Gas Company made me realize that I wanted more! The fast paced environment and dealing with people in need was where I wanted to be. Short of wanting to drive a big red fire truck, I thought about helping people for a different reason. Not to help because they wanted something, but to help when they needed something or someone. What a feeling it is, to help someone when they are vulnerable and scared.

A friend mentioned that Ontario College of Health and Technology had the program I was looking for. I emailed the College later that day and within minutes there was a response from Mel, telling me all about the course and asking if I could start on Tuesday? I answered back right away, yes! For some reason I didn’t even think twice.  I was very nervous at first but both Nick and Mel made me feel at ease about embarking on this new adventure. So here I am a graduate from the Communications Dispatch course, and I have been offered a Job with the local fire department. Which I have gratefully accepted.

I could not have done any of this without the help of my loving family, friends, classmates and caring facility at O.C.H.T. What a wonderful gift of support you all have given me, which has contributed to my success. I was also humbled with receiving the Peter Gallant award. This was truly an honor, to be a recipient of this award. I will do everything I can to live up to such great expectations.

This new chapter in my life begins and now I can enjoy the career I have always dreamed about.  In closing I would like to thank everyone at O.C.H.T.  for making this experience the most rewarding one so far.
